Recording Horror

The forbidden recording, like the opening of a horror movie: a black title card “INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS” typed out letter by letter, then the image of an old tape flickers on with a tape jump. The hallway of an abandoned house, filmed on a camcorder (REC, the date, the viewfinder corners): the bulb swings on its cord, the light and the shadows move with it, mist drifts along the floor, the door at the end creaks ajar… and a silhouette appears in the doorway, then vanishes when the bulb cuts out. The countdown as a camcorder counter, “don't turn off the light…”. At 0:00: the light goes out at once, two eyes open, “IT BEGINS.” drops with a rumble — and when the light comes back, the silhouette is right there. All of its sounds are brand new, made for this pack. (Régis 0.3.12)
